To understand Sylvakits, one needs to understand the world around them, Terivia. They are a new species joining the numbers of humans and otherwise, and all the same privileges and experiences are available to them if they so wish. Modern technology is much akin to our own - phones, vehicles, games and more are available through the use of aethertech.
Magic
The flow of magic in Terivia is controlled by aether, the source and catalyst of life. Every single being in Terivia has their own, inherent aether that allows them to use magic in a great number of ways, drawing on the elements around them or the skies above. Aether is constant and flowing, but extracting all of it from one region would dry out its resources swiftly, leaving it a barren wasteland until the aether is restored either slowly over time, or by other means. This would, however, take a great amount of effort and is not often possible by normal persons.
While there are elements at play, there are no specific connections to aether itself given that most is drawn from the environment it is in. If one were to draw aether from a volcano, it would be heavily fire-oriented, and so on. Celestial aether is typically drawn from around temples. If one needs aether weighted heavily in a specific element, it's common for stores of infused crystals or other precious stones to be put together for use in their tomes, staves, wands, jewelry, tech or whatever they may be using.
Terivians also commonly believe that an element itself is never bad or evil, only the person who wields it in a negative way. There are those that use Death magic in order to help others, and those that use Life magic to harm or even torment others, for example. Scholars are particularly adamant about this stance on the elements.
There are an endless number of elements both major and minor, but all of Terivia agrees that there are main ones that lay the foundation for others. Those elements are Earth, Wind, Fire, Water, Life, Death, and Celestial.
Aethertech
Within Terivia there are entire cities that solely use magic to function, and entire cities that solely use technological inventions. The majority, however, are run on a combination of both called aethertech. Pioneered by Ginyos E. Sufton, a famed inventor, aethertech has helped the world run smoothly and advance steadily for the past several hundred years. The introduction of aethertech was met with caution at first, but through perseverance and reassurance, it was proven beneficial and life-changing to many. There are many kinds of devices available to the people of Terivia these days, but the most notable ones are often related to public use.
The most common of these public-use inventions other than lamp-lights are Sky-Skiffs, which are smaller versions of Aetherships used to get from point A to point B within a city. Sky-Skiffs are often 20-seater ferries run by a singular aether-crystal core, and its first prototypes alongside Aetherships were introduced to Aethertech-backed cities around a hundred years ago. These skiffs and boats are able to sail through the air with as much ease as they are able to through water with a simple flick of a switch.
Other common inventions are housing lights, communication devices such as phones, and upgraded tools for workers such as farmers, miners, and builders that make their jobs easier by adding levitation modules to wheelbarrows, aetherjets to hammers that allow a forward-moving hammer to hit harder, and pulses that locate minerals and ore in the earth.
While many were enthusiastic about the progression of aethertech, there were still groups that worried about the impact it may have on the environment if it were to progress too far and become too greedy. Ginyos Sufton has done his best to ensure that the balance of aether is always his top priority, and often noted that any creation using aether often only needs a small fraction, and it would be restored to the environment before that item likely even ships.
Travel
While short-distance travel is dominated by Sky-Skiffs, those that want to travel far and quickly book tickets for Aetherships. The largest of these commercial flights can carry around 160 people at one time, and are powered by a rotation of artificially grown crystals that are then charged with the required magic to fly the ship.
Most areas of Terivia have open borders and no travel restrictions, though some may be harder to get to in certain seasons than others. For example, the north is often experiencing winter storms, and so larger and non-specialized flights may only travel there during warmer months to minimize damage to the ships. Smaller, more specialized flights are likely the better choice if one needs to travel often.
The exception to open travel are the Shadedeep Isles - islands rampant with dark energy and frightening creatures with high territory drives. These islands are widely believed to be for the foolish to travel to, but certain guilds of monster hunters may seek private passage to them.
If one has a fear of heights or simply prefers the scenery of the ground, then that is also a wholly viable option - though a little slower. There are as many methods for ground travel as one may think, from buses to animals to personal vehicles. Anything available in a modern world has its own equivalent in Terivia.
